The Sisters of Mercy Fan Wiki
A Brief Overview
The Sisters of Mercy are a rock band that emerged from the British post-punk scene in 1980-1981. They are one of the most popular and influential bands in gothic rock, although since the late 1980s their singer, Andrew Eldritch, has distanced both himself and the band from that label.
The band cite Leonard Cohen, The Stooges, Suicide, and Motörhead amongst their influences. They released three original studio albums, the last of which appeared in 1990. This was followed by a 1992 compilation of their early singles and the 1993 release Greatest Hits Vol. 1, which included their final officially released track under a record label contract, Under The Gun.
Since then, the band has continued primarily as a touring act. Singer and songwriter Andrew Eldritch is the only remaining original member; even Doktor Avalanche, is not the same drum machine as "he" used to be. All other founding members had left by 1985, shortly after their debut album First And Last And Always was released.
By the time of the second album, Floodland (1987), The Sisters had effectively become a studio-based project. However, for Vision Thing (1990), Eldritch assembled a full touring band once again, although that lineup was short-lived, and finally dissolved in 1993.
The band has continued to tour regularly, and in recent years has had a relatively stable lineup.
Will there ever be another album? No one knows, although speculation continues and new songs still regularly appear in live performances.
Recent Events
The Sisters took 2018 off. There were no gigs that year. Think of it as the calm before the storm.
In 2019, the European Summer Festival Tour introduced The Sisters' new guitarist, Dylan Smith. These festival appearances were followed by two gigs in Greece and a surprise Near Meth Experience concert in Antwerp on September 16th, ahead of the worldwide National Treasure Tour of 2019. Later that year, several dates were announced for 2020, but the global spread of coronavirus brought The Sisters' touring to an early halt after just four UK gigs.
After more than a year of lockdowns and contact restrictions, the reopening of venues at least allowed some modest 40th anniversary activity: three consecutive shows at Camden Roundhouse in September 2021.
2022 was finally a strong year for live shows again, including summer festivals and a trip to Australia and New Zealand. 2023 then saw the first US tour in 14 years, visits to Latin America and European festival sites, as well as a full European tour later in the year. At the beginning of that tour, The Sisters' second guitarist, Dylan Smith, abruptly left the band. After a few gigs, he was replaced by Kai, who has since done an excellent job and become a full member of the band.
The first half of 2024 saw the band play a series of club shows in Germany, France, and Belgium, along with several summer festivals across Europe. This was followed by another North American tour, which also returned to Canada and was titled Sisters Scar The Planet Edge.
The 2025 tour, dubbed All Wires Red, happened, and the upcoming 2026 tour sees the band moving ever forward, through Europe and beyond; see Current events
